What is Umamii?

Umamii is a restaurant discovery app and food lovers’ community that acts like a personal dining concierge. It helps you decide where to eat based on your tastes, your trusted people, and credible sources, instead of endless anonymous reviews. What makes Umamii different is that you can fully customize what gets recommended to you, including who and what you trust and what you prefer.

Where is Umamii available right now?

Umamii is currently live across BC and the Greater Toronto Area. More cities are coming soon. Based on demand, we currently have a waitlist, but the wait is not long, especially in the cities we are live in.

Is Umamii free to use?

Yes. Umamii is free for diners to download and use.

How is Umamii different from Google, Yelp, or Instagram?

Most platforms show you everything. Umamii focuses on what is right for you. We learn your preferences, factor in trusted voices like friends, chefs, and local experts, and surface restaurants that genuinely fit your taste instead of whatever is simply most popular.

Do I need an account to use Umamii?

Yes. You get the best experience with an account. Creating an account lets you unlock personalized recommendations, see what is new and trending, see what the community loves, discover other people with similar tastes, and ultimately discover new restaurants that you will love.

How do recommendations work?

Umamii uses a mix of signals to understand you. When you heart restaurants, leave reviews, follow people, and adjust which review and popular sites are meaningful to you, we learn your flavour profile and surface better recommendations. The more you use Umamii, the smarter your recommendations become.

Can I use Umamii while travelling?

Yes. As long as you are in one of our supported regions, you can use Umamii to find great spots on the road. Over time, we plan to expand to more cities so you can rely on Umamii wherever you travel.

What if I encounter bugs or offensive content?

Ask Umamii AI

What is Ask Umamii AI?

Ask Umamii AI is a conversational dining assistant inside the app. Instead of scrolling through lists and filters, you can tell it what you are looking for and it will suggest restaurants that match your tastes and the occasion.

How do I unlock Ask Umamii AI?

Click on the Ask Umamii AI button on the Discover screen. You will need to create an account in a supported city, update to the latest version of the app, and unlock Personalized Recs for this feature to be available. Then tap it to start a chat and tell us what you are in the mood for.

What can I ask Ask Umamii AI?

You can describe your situation in plain language. For example, “Find me a cozy Italian spot for date night near Kits with good wine,” “Find a Mexican restaurant in Vancouver that has vegetarian options,” or “Find an upscale French restaurant in Vancouver for a special dinner.” The more context you share, the better the recommendations.

How is Ask Umamii AI different from regular search and filters?

Search and filters are great when you know exactly what you want to tweak. Ask Umamii AI is better when you have a scenario in mind and want ideas. It combines your preferences, trusted signals, and what is nearby and open now to give you a short list that actually fits.

Does Ask Umamii AI use my personal tastes?

Yes. Over time, Ask Umamii AI learns from your hearts, reviews, and activity on Umamii. It uses these signals to personalize suggestions so that they feel more and more “you.”

Does Ask Umamii AI only recommend restaurants on Umamii?

Ask Umamii AI focuses on restaurants in the regions where Umamii is live and where we have enough data to give reliable suggestions. As we expand to more cities, its coverage will grow as well.

Is Ask Umamii AI always right?

No AI is perfect, especially in a city where places are always changing. Treat its suggestions like a very informed friend. You should still tap into the restaurant profiles, photos, and reviews to make sure it feels right for you.

Is Ask Umamii AI free to use?

Yes. Ask Umamii AI is included as part of the Umamii app. If we ever introduce limits or paid features in the future, we will make that clear in the app.

Can I still use the app without Ask Umamii AI?

Yes. You can always browse, search, and filter restaurants the usual way. Ask Umamii AI is an extra tool to help you decide faster when you do not feel like scrolling.

For chefs, restaurateurs, and creators

My restaurant is not showing up or has outdated details. What should I do?

If your restaurant is missing or something looks off, reach out to us at help@umamii.ai with your restaurant name and updated info. We will review and update your listing.

What is a Featured Voice?

Featured Voices are chefs, restaurateurs, industry insiders, and food creators whose opinions our community trusts. They share their favourite spots, stories, and lists to help diners discover great places through a more human lens.

Who can apply to be a Featured Voice?

We work with chefs, restaurateurs, operators, food writers, and creators who care about thoughtful, honest recommendations. If you are involved in food and restaurants and want to share meaningful picks with our community, you can apply here.

Does it cost anything to be featured?

No. There is no fee to become a Featured Voice or to have a custom profile with us

How long does it take to go live?

We aim to respond to applications within one business day. At busier times, it may take two to three business days. We are still a small team, but we try to move quickly.

Can I feature more than one restaurant?

Yes. Many of our Featured Voices are involved in more than one concept. We can highlight all the restaurants you are associated with.

I am a creator, not a chef. Can I still apply?

Yes. We also feature food and restaurant creators who share useful, honest content and care about their audience.

How do I apply to become a Featured Voice or set up a custom profile?

You can submit a request through our Featured Voices page or email help@umamii.ai. We will follow up with a short form so we can learn a bit more about you and how you want to contribute.

Recommendations, ratings, and data

How do you decide which restaurants to recommend?

We look at a blend of signals. That can include your activity on Umamii, what your trusted people love, community reviews and app engagement, and credible sources like established guides and awards. Our goal is to match you with restaurants that fit your tastes, not just what is trending.

Can restaurants pay to be recommended?

No. Restaurants cannot pay to appear in your personalized recommendations. If we introduce any paid placements in the future, they will be clearly labeled so you can tell the difference.

Are reviews on Umamii moderated?

We encourage honest, respectful feedback. Reviews that are abusive or violate our guidelines may be removed. Over time, your feed will lean more toward places and people that match your tastes.

Where do your ratings and awards information come from?

We combine signals from the Umamii community with trusted external sources such as established guides, local lists, and awards where available in each market. We use these as inputs into our own rating and recommendation logic.

Account, privacy, and support

What data do you collect and why?

We collect data you share with us, such as your profile details and reviews, as well as activity in the app, such as hearts and saves. We use this to personalize your experience and improve Umamii. We do not sell your personal data. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

How do I update or delete my data?

You can update some information directly in the app. If you want to delete your account or have questions about your data, email us at help@umamii.ai and we will help.

I found incorrect information for a restaurant. What should I do?

You can report an issue through the app or email help@umamii.ai with the restaurant name and the correction. We will review and update as soon as we can.

I am having trouble signing in. How can I get help?

First, try the “Forgot my password” or sign in link options in the app. If that does not work, email help@umamii.ai from the same email address you used to sign up.
